Eventually I discovered that ESXi was Asus Z97-P Intel RAIDAHCI the controller but not the drives connected to it. The same was true for a completely different card with the same chipset. Recently, I gave up and used a different card solo x1 with an asmedia chipset that works fine thanks to your sata-xahci.

I downloaded all the latest drivers from ASUS: Intel AHCI/RAID Driver Path for Windows Asus Z97-P Intel RAIDAHCI 32bit & Win7 64bit & Win8 32bit & Win8 64bit Hardware RAID Controller for ASUS Z97 Sabbertooth. And Samsung even tells me it is NOT in AHCI mode.?????
Not only that, but for some reason my BIOS is missing Intel Rapid Storage.
